What should I eat and drink to avoid motion sickness on a cruise ship?
When choosing a cruise ship, it is important to consider the availability of outdoor areas and open spaces. Look for ships with spacious outdoor decks, lounges with panoramic views, or promenade decks where passengers can walk or sit comfortably. Pay attention to the ship’s layout and design to ensure easy access to these areas, as it can significantly impact the convenience of enjoying fresh air during the journey. Read reviews and seek recommendations from fellow cruisers or reputable sources.
Stateroom Locations That Are Best for Avoiding Motion Sickness
Avoid excessive consumption of caffeinated or alcoholic beverages as they can contribute to dehydration. Inside cabins are often priced more affordably compared to cabins with windows or balconies. This makes them an attractive option for budget-conscious travelers or those who prioritize spending their cruise budget on other experiences or amenities. Choosing an inside cabin allows passengers to enjoy the cruise experience while minimizing the impact on their wallet. Engaging in certain activities or behaviors can increase the chances of experiencing motion sickness. For example, reading a book or staring at a screen while the ship is in motion can exacerbate symptoms due to conflicting sensory signals.

Around 12.5% of people suffer from claustrophobia (the fear of enclosed spaces) and a further 1% suffer from agoraphobia (the fear of not being able to escape). By having access to fresh air, passengers can experience a refreshing change in the atmosphere and potentially reduce the impact of motion sickness. When it comes to choosing the best cabin location to minimize motion sickness on a cruise ship, several factors need to be considered. The placement of the cabin within the ship, the deck level, and the type of stateroom can all impact the severity of motion sickness symptoms. By selecting the right cabin and following certain precautions, you can significantly reduce the risk of experiencing seasickness during your cruise. The rocking motion of the ship confuses your body’s senses into becoming imbalanced. Thankfully, I brought Dramamine on that cruise and felt better when I was able to head to my cabin and take a pill. Remember that everyone reacts differently to the various remedies out there.
Some regions or routes may have rougher sea conditions than others, which can increase the likelihood of experiencing motion sickness. Research the typical weather and sea conditions of the planned itinerary and choose a cruise that aligns with your preferences for calmer waters. Several factors contribute to the likelihood of experiencing motion sickness, such as susceptibility, previous experiences, and individual sensitivities.
The best cruise ship deck for many people is a lower deck because less movement will be felt there. If you want to avoid taking the elevator, a mid-level deck would be best. Below the passenger cabins, there are the crew cabins, the engine room and other facilities such as the laundry, jail and medical centre. On ships with passenger cabins on Deck 1, the decks beneath have names such as Deck A, Deck B and Deck C.
There are other factors to consider too, like noise, stairs and being close to the action. Look for green Granny Smith apples; their pectin combined with natural sugars reduces acid and settles topsy-turvy stomachs. If it’s too windy, try finding a sheltered spot where you can feel the breeze without being exposed to strong gusts. Opting for plain water with electrolytes added – like coconut water – will keep your hydration balanced without causing unwanted side effects. While there is limited scientific evidence of their effectiveness, many people find them helpful as a non-invasive alternative to medication.
